Two weeks ago, I’ve bought myself a second hand Draytek Vigor 2950, which had 19″  brackets.. which forced me to get a 19″ rack (I needed an excuse). Real racks were a bit to big for my taste so I wanted a custom rack. The cheap solution would be a Lack Rack A 19″ rack made from a 5 euro Ikea table.

I’ve bought two Ikea tables and a piece of wood from the local construction store (which was the most expensive part) and got to work. As I sometimes have good ideas  in my head,  but being not that handy, I’ve asked my friend Martijn to help. He’s better with tools than me, so he helped me a lot.

First step, unpack the tables. The tables are 55cm in depth and I just needed 30cm, so  they needed to be sawed. As Ikea tables are filled with cardboard, this would we cause some new challenges.

The corner of the table contained some woods blocks that were used to connect the legs. We took them from the part that got sawed of and put them in de part we’re going to use.

I just had to push a bit to shove it in, as there is only cardboard to hold it back.

In the top I’ve drilled four holes for the cables. Each 20mm wide.

Then I’ve screwed in the legs in the bottom. The top was glued as it isn’t possible to screw them in on both the top and bottom.

As a real Ikea furniture piece, it needed a back with little nails. I’ve also glued some pvc pipes in the holes.

My Lack Rack hanging in the cellar. Still a mess but my Draytek Vigor 2950 is already installed.
As the legs are hollow and filled with cardboard, just like the top, don’t use a lack rack with heavy equipment, or find something to the strengthen the legs.

Finally my cable management and patch panel from Ebay arrived. The patch panel looked really great for the price of 15 euro but the internals where wired by drunk, color blind monkeys so I’ve used a multimeter to find the correct wiring.

My Lack Rack is finally finished.
The cables are a bit long so I need to make some new shorter ones, but that will be something for next weekend.
